Project FutureSafe Aotearoa

Project FutureSafe Aotearoa was a health, safety, and wellbeing initiative that endeavored to understand the existing state of the ecosystem and formulate a future vision, alongside designing a roadmap for change.

This was the first project under the FutureSafe Aotearoa identity and was a tripartite led by Business New Zealand in conjunction with the CTU and was sponsored by WorkSafe.

The projects objective was to explore and seek to establish a roadmap that would inspire and deliver nationwide transformation of the health, safety and wellbeing ecosystem.

It was an ambitious task that was really a continuation of a journey that started with the Pike River Task Force and was already in motion across different areas and at different speeds of development. Project FutureSafe Aotearoa was working to combine these efforts within a single framework and produce a long-term plan for Aotearoa.

The background

The ‘New Zealand Health & Safety at Work Strategy, 2018-2028’ is one of the key initiatives that will drive improved outcomes in Health, Safety and Wellbeing in the workplace. The challenge is to bring together an ecosystem where participants are often disconnected or working in isolation of each other, unable to leverage best practice to influence positive behaviour and don’t have a distinct ‘hub’ or ‘destination’ to focus attention on transforming the health, safety and wellbeing ecosystem so we can reduce workplace harm and save lives.

Project FutureSafe Aotearoa sought to identify key levers that connect all relevant stakeholders, businesses and workers across Aotearoa and engage them in a process that provided a roadmap to transform health, safety and wellbeing in the workplace. With dedicated commitment, purposeful contribution and abundant energy we can collectively make a significant difference and deliver outcomes that reduce harm, improve wellbeing and save lives in the workplace and within our communities

The journey

A robust and thought-provoking approach to developing a Roadmap to Change was taken. There was great value in looking at the challenges around health, safety and wellbeing in greater depth and with new perspectives.

The process, underpinned by critical thinking, leveraged the knowledge of New Zealand’s health, safety and wellbeing experts, re-examined the landscape and uncovered fresh perspectives that guided us on our journey to mapping a new ecosystem.

We brought together individuals with a vast array of knowledge, skills and experience in health, safety and wellbeing and drew upon their capabilities to analyse and synthesise the information at hand. Their observations, insights and feedback informed our process as we went and influenced our roadmap to change.
